Sinus Precautions

For the next 4–6 weeks, it is very important to avoid any activity that creates pressure changes in your sinuses. Increased sinus pressure can disrupt healing, delay closure, or cause complications.

Please follow these instructions carefully:

What to Avoid

  • Do not blow your nose forcefully. If you need to wipe your nose, do so gently.

  • Try not to sneeze. If you must sneeze, keep your mouth open to reduce sinus pressure.

  • Do not use a straw. Suction can increase pressure in the sinus area.

  • Do not spit forcefully. Let saliva drain naturally from your mouth.

  • Do not smoke or vape. Smoking delays healing and significantly increases the risk of infection and sinus complications.

  • Do not rinse vigorously. Gentle salt water rinses are allowed if recommended, but avoid swishing forcefully.

  • Do not wear your denture or partial denture unless specifically instructed otherwise.

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity. This includes heavy lifting, intense exercise, or activities that raise your heart rate significantly.

Diet Instructions

  • Eat soft foods only during the healing period.

  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth whenever possible.

  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods that may disrupt the surgical site.

Why These Precautions Matter

The sinus cavity is closely connected to the upper jaw. Any pressure changes can interfere with healing, reopen the surgical area, or allow air or bacteria to pass into the sinus. Following these precautions helps ensure proper healing and reduces the risk of complications.
