After Botox: Post-Treatment Instructions
Botox treatments are quick and minimally invasive, but proper aftercare is important to ensure optimal results and reduce the risk of unwanted side effects. Please review and follow the instructions below carefully.
What to Expect After Treatment
It is normal to notice small red dots at the injection sites immediately after treatment, as well as minor bruising or swelling. These effects are temporary and typically resolve within a few hours to a couple of days.
If desired, the appearance of bruising or swelling may be minimized with makeup. Some patients also choose to take Arnica Montana, which is available at most pharmacies or supermarkets, to help reduce bruising.
Caring for the Injection Sites
If you notice any blood at the injection sites, gently wipe the area using clean water. Use light strokes that move away from the eyes:
-
Upward strokes on the forehead
-
Sideways strokes near the outer corners of the eyes
-
Downward strokes below the eyes
Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas.
Do not apply cold compresses to the treated areas for the first few hours after the procedure, as this may cause the Botox to migrate away from the intended muscles.
Activity Restrictions
Although there is usually little to no downtime after Botox, certain precautions should be followed to prevent the medication from moving into unintended areas.
For the remainder of the day:
-
Avoid bending your head forward
-
Avoid lying down for 4–5 hours
-
Avoid jarring movements or vigorous facial exercises
-
Do not massage or manipulate the treated areas
-
Avoid showering immediately after treatment if it requires bending your head forward
Strenuous physical activity, including intense exercise, should be avoided for 24 hours following treatment.
Daily Routine and Medications
You may resume most normal daily activities shortly after treatment. However, ask your doctor before making any changes to your skincare routine or before using additional medications or supplements following your Botox treatment.
Final Notes
When Botox aftercare instructions are followed properly, recovery is typically quick and uncomplicated. Results will begin to appear gradually over several days, with full effects typically visible within one to two weeks.
