Orbit Fracture Post-Operative Instructions

Wound Care: You may have visible sutures on your face. If non-resorbable (black sutures) are placed, your surgeon will remove these sutures usually at the 1 week appointment. You can clean the surgical area every day, gently, with warm water and soap, and then dry by gentle dubbing the area with a clean towel.

Swelling: Swelling is normal after surgery. It is normal to have “black and blues” in the operated area, after surgery. There changes are temporary. The swelling will be most noticeable on the 2nd day after surgery. If the swelling keeps increasing, becomes “hot” and tender, you should contact your doctor.

Numbness to Midface: this is common after the surgery.

Pain Control: You will receive a combination of pain medications. Severe pain lasting longer than 7 days may indicate a serious problem and the patient needs to be evaluated on the next business day or the oral surgery staff contacted.

Antibiotics: After discharge from the office or hospital the patient is given prescriptions for antibiotic medication. These medications are gives to prevent infection in the surgical site.

Vision changes or bleeding: This is normal immediately after the surgery. If it persist or worsens, contact your doctor.

Follow up Visit: The patient needs to be seen one seek after surgery. Appointments are then made in 1 week intervals unless determined on a cases by case basis. Failure to keep follow up appointments prevents the oral surgery staff from ensuring good care for the patient may lead to any number of the above mentioned problems often avoidable by routine visits.
