Thin vs Thick Biotype
- A thick biotype provides greater stability for the peri-implant soft tissues with more predictable healing response following surgery and around restorations.
- Thin bioptypes predispose to unpredibtable healing and allow titanium show through.
- Dennis Tarnow demonstrated that a distance of 6mm or more from the alveolar crest to contact point reduces the probability of intact papillae.
- In sites with adjacent implants, bone resorption of 1 to 2 mm at the proximal aspects of the implants leads to a flattening of the inter-implant bone and consequently a short inter-implant papilla. A distance of at least 3 mm has been recommended between 2 adjacent implants to minimize the bone resorption.
